I paint landscapes of places visited, Sussex Downs, Rural France, Greek Islands - anywhere that is interesting and I also paint the imaginary world of my dreams - (I call it Oputia). And it's not just geography - this place has it's own culture, rituals and history. In a dream, real becomes surreal, mystical or mischievous or just plain weird - but it's an interesting exploration. So, with the application and manipulation of oil paint on canvas the painting comes to life and takes its own path. Sometimes that will trigger a memory or idea and point in a certain direction - one painting leads to another. Using classic techniques and vocabularies of landscape painting helps me to render the imaginary real, using pattern, rhythm, tone and colour applied in a traditional way but serving to reveal a new fantastic reality.
