A painting of a giant tank for thinking in, with people floating inside, all set in an unlikely mountain village.

Well the seaside promenade is vaguely familiar, complete with important monument and wandering tourists. It looks to be extremely hot. The dog is a bit of a worry - is it friendly? Is it mine running towards me in greeting or is it in full attack mode? I'm not sure.

Painted from a dream of people on a hillside involved in a strange ceremony involving brightly coloured paper discs. I'm not sure what it's all about but they seem to be enjoying themselves. Perhaps it's a comment on how to an outsider other peoples cultures can seem extremely strange.

This painting was inspired by a dream of a mountainous landscape - explorers in a balloon boat drifting over an undiscovered land. Clear, fresh air, a lake, a mill and a distant lakeside town.

Edward and Josephine Hopper had an occasionally fraught relationship. I found figures to represent them, a model of their buick, and made this scene. The background is based on one of my paintings of Rockport, Massachusetts.

Three views of the famous white garden at Sissinghurst in Kent painted in a thick impasto with the palette knife. From watercolour sketches made on site these works were developed in the studio. This was painted in the studio from drawings, watercolours and notes taken during a trip in Egypt. Wadi El Seboua is an excursion taken en route to the temple of Abu Simbel, on Lake Nasser. Painted almost exclusively with the palette knife.

This idea emerged when I was doodling around on the canvas unsure of my subject. I love the topographical illustrations of the 18th - 19th centuries - this painting is a nod in that direction.

An ocean liner parked in the heart of the city. It seems most unlikely but there is the unquestionable logic of a dream. If New York were crossed with Venice it would perhaos look like this.

Many, many years ago I sat on Culver Down on the Isle Of Wight and an aeroplane from Bembridge airfield was doing aerobatics. It flew past so close I felt I could reach out and touch it. In this painting I added another plane and included myself, just watching.

One can interpret this in lots of different ways. Maybe the gothic ruins represent the state of the church with the archbishop remaining as an essentially comic figure. The domes could be an observatory representing science or a mosque representing alternative beliefs. Maybe the explanation given to the archbishop is an apology for the damage caused or a view of the universe from a non believers perspective.

Labranda is an amazing archaeological site, remote and high in the hills, quiet, with bees buzzing lazily around. A very evocative place.
